Member Profile: Chris Salvo Photography

It’s appropriate that I’m sitting on an airplane while I write this. The last eight-plus years have seen Suzanne and me gone more than not from our so-called permanent residence in Houston. Fortunately, we like it that way.

These days our work is strictly location assignments. The studio we built in the backyard in 1991 now houses our pop-up RV trailer, which we affectionately named Jiffy (get it?). With our schedule, Jiffy is as close as we get to owning a pet.

Projects have taken us to almost 50 countries and counting. In the last year alone we have shot in Iraq (twice), parts of Africa, Canada, China, Indonesia, Croatia, Venezuela and elsewhere. I can say ‘where is the toilet?’ in 9 different languages. I kinda like the chewy taste of boiled jellyfish tendrils and I have learned to sleep anywhere, in any time zone. My clients benefit greatly from these quirky although extremely useful skills. But for some reason my children remain unimpressed with dear old Dad.

This year, Suzanne and I celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and the 22nd anniversary of Salvo Photography. WOW! That seems incredible. And since we work together, sometimes 24-7, I figure we should get credit for more years than the normal see-you-at-night-and-on-weekends relationship. To be fair, our marriage should be measured in dog years. That makes this our 140th year of wedded bliss. Instead of silver or gold, this must be something like our plutonium anniversary. Thank goodness Suzanne would rather have a good pair of hiking boots than jewelry.

It’s great being together on assignments. It makes being out on the road fun. Suzanne manages the logistics and is an able assistant/stylist, allowing me to concentrate on the shots. Clients love her. She’s my number one fan but also my worst critic. She knows when I’m not giving 100-percent, and she considers it part of her job to let me know about it. Oh lucky me! But seriously, in all these years we have only had one fight in front of a client. Just one, but it was spectacular. OK, two fights - and that’s being honest.

Our work mostly consists of annual reports and ad campaigns, but we enjoy doing occasional editorial assignments. We work with ad agencies and design firms but some of my favorite clients are corporate direct.

Life is good. Our four kids: Richard, Daniel, Jeffrey and Hayley are on their own and doing super. We couldn’t be more proud of them.

Work is good. Upcoming photo assignments will take us to Brazil and India and finally back to Italy - we can’t wait to go. Suzanne’s monthly column, Visually Speaking, is the number one rated article in the IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) magazine, Communication World Bulletin. Her workshops on corporate photography can be seen in San Francisco, Houston, Topeka and Phoenix in the next two months.

Love is good. We laugh a lot. And at the end of the day we’re just thankful for good health, good friends and the support of our family. We’re blessed in many ways and we know it. Drop us an email, Suzanne and I would love to hear from you.
