I'm a photoholic! I love photography...I love taking photographs...I love looking at photographs...some of my best friends are photographers.
As a kid, I can remember pouring over issues of Life and National Geographic (not to mention Playboy). But it wasn't until college that photography became a serious passion.
Majoring in journalism, I was required to take a course in photojournalism... basic black and white processing and printing. Like most people, that magic for me began in the darkroom.
Works by Weston, Cartier-Bresson, Frank and Penn were not only inspiring, but influential as well. Later, the images of the color masters Ernst Haas, Jay Maisel and Pete Turner took my vision to a whole other level of seeing.
In 1984, I had the good fortune to travel to Japan where I attended a workshop conducted by Ernst Haas.
That experience became a turning point for me as a photographer and as a person. Ernst became my mentor, a dear friend and godfather to my daughter, Jessica.
After his death, I was inspired to carry on and began teaching photography workshops. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
As a charter member of the Houston ASMP, I am proud of it's accomplishments. I've always encouraged photographers to join ASMP in order to gain the benefits of membership.
Not only does it provide guidance and advice, but also gives hope for the future of the profession.
While this profession has gone through many highs and lows during my career, I can't think of anything else I would rather have done. It's taken me to places I never could have imagined, introduced me to all kinds of people I never would have met and help give me a real perspective on life.
I still love just going out there with a camera and seeing what's there. Yes, I admit it...I am an unrepentant photoholic!
