Editor's Letter
by Jim Caldwell

I just ran across a September 10, 2001 issue of Newsweek magazine. With a lead article about the Salt Lake olympic games/Mormon Church, it was filled with pieces about new kinds of roller skates, teen hand signals, immigration reform, Berlin style, NFL parity, and reality TV--clearly a slow news week.

What a difference a day makes. "Reality TV" took on a new, grimmer meaning the next day, gluing most of us to our sets in shock and horror.

That evening my wife and I spent a lot of time hugging each other, thanking our lucky stars that we were together alive. But we aren't unharmed. And what American isn't? Our naive confidence in basic human decency is shattered as we stare at pure evil in the faces of the hijackers, zealots so filled with hatred for us that they were willing to die to destroy symbols of our success and power.

How incredibly sad... For our fellow members and all those directly harmed by this tragedy, we extend our heartfelt sympathy. But as the President said, our strength lies not in our institutions but in our citizens who refuse to be cowed by terrorists. We will persevere. I don't know about you, but we're still flying.
