A
Sense of Community
by Nash Baker A few years ago a young assistant knocked on the studio door wanting to borrow a cup of developer. While it might seem a little strange, it was really commonplace for any number of things to be shared among the Bartlett Street photo studios. A sense of community existed where people shared equipment, studios and ideas. While I knew everyone was not an ASMP member, it wasn't a matter of "us" vs. "them." We were all photographers who benefited from clustering together along Bartlett Street. What reminded me of this is that young assistant is now our most recent member. Take a look at Beryl's work and story in the first issue of the Webletter. Today, the old neighborhood is rapidly being razed for overpriced townhouses, and major studios have downsized to a shell of their former selves, yet there is progress in the new economy. The access to information about any number of things is certainly easier. ASMP provides an amazing resource online. The members-only forum and specialty-group email lists provide answers and information to just about any question you have. While it's hard to get a cup of developer online, it's a lot easier to stay in touch. The Houston Chapter is now using email and our Web site to deliver information to our members.
